Lord Hanuman at Thiruvalleeswarar temple

After the battle, Lord Hanuman travelled to the shores of Rameshwaram (Dhanushkodi) to worship Lord Shiva. He set out in search of the Shiv linga. Hanuman was late. He, therefore, wanted Lord Rama to worship the Shiva linga he had brought. Hanuman, however, considered grabbing it and putting it somewhere. He thought about moving the Shiv Linga with his tail. Later, he made an attempt to move the linga with his hand, but it remained immobile. After that, he exerted all of his strength, but in vain. He was powerless to shake it.

When Lord Rama noticed this, he ordered Hanuman to halt. Hanuman, however, did not pay attention. Lord Sita advised us to stop as we had already praised Lord Shiva. After hearing their counsel, he stopped shaking it.

Lord Hanuman regretted what he had done. He then strolled around the shrine, pleading for Lord Shiva's pardon. Afterwards, he went to Naratha Munivar to make up for his error. He suggested that he go to the emerald-green abode of Lord Shiv at Thiruvalithayam.

Lord Hanuman relaxed by the water as he sat there. He offered worship to Lord Shiva each day. He was preceded by Lord Shiva because of his devotion. Lord Hanuman confessed to the Lord his immoral behaviour after meeting him at Rameshwaram. He wanted to apologise for his actions. Lord Shiva wasn't angry despite what he did. He implied that Lord Rama need to travel to the Himalayas to worship the Holy Shiva Linga. However, they constructed a little Shiva Linga and prayed for me. He expressed his opinions and said it Lord Hanuman was lounging by the pond. He often paid homage to Lord Shiva. His devotion caused Lord Shiva to come before him. After seeing the Lord at Rameshwaram, Lord Hanuman confessed to his immoral deed.

Lord Shiva’s promise

Lord Hanuman also realized that Lord Shiva had accepted his mistake on good terms. When Shiva was rendered speechless by his actions, he asked Hanuman to grant him a wish. “Those who cannot visit Rameshwaram and worship you, you shall provide the same blessings if they visit Thiruvalithayam,” Hanuman said to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva hearing the wish, said, “Anyone who visits me and you here in Thiruvalithayam will receive both our blessings and grace same as visiting Rameshwaram.”

Many people believe in this legendary story. Few believe the Shiva linga brought by Lord Hanuman is still present in Thiruvalithayam. Lord Hanuman worships Lord Shiva at a shrine in Thiruvalithayam.
